Maria Cornish

(she/her)

I am a poet living near the North Norfolk coast in the UK.  My poetry reflects the liminal space and time I inhabit and includes themes of local distinctiveness and place, ecological change, connection, loss, and memory.

Currently, I am working on a poetry collection and series of podcasts called “Returning to the Edge” with illustrations by artist, Kate Birkbeck. I am also working on a collaborative project with Sue Macmillan, a local storyteller, to produce spoken word performances influenced by the Norfolk coast as well as the connection between middle age, femininity and belonging.

I am on the Management Team of St Nicks Arts Centre in Norfolk working to expand the existing programme of music, film and theatre, to include art exhibitions and spoken word performances.  I did a BA (Hons) in Theatre at Dartington College of Arts, Devon in the late 80’s producing theatre pieces that combined choreography, vocal music, spoken word/poetry and art installation.  I went on to work in Primary education for 27 years until I left in 2022 to focus on writing.
